Seneca will not see a state championship game this year, lose to Hammonton in playoff match

Posted Friday, November 09, 2007 by Doug Melegari

The Seneca Golden Eagles football team played their last night game of the 2007 season Friday Night. They were defeated by the Hammonton Blue Devils in the playoffs. The score was 37 to 6. Seneca had one touchdown the entire evening, putting the only points on the scoreboard. The kick that followed was no good. The football players were well aware before the game that they would have a tough battle as Hammonton was the number one seed and they were number eight.

Seneca now has a 4-5 record. They have suffered four consecutive loses. Despite this being a hard loss for the seniors on the team, everyone on the team plans on working together for the Cherokee Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl Game, which is the last game of the regular season. Head Coach Fisher has encouraged all of the seniors to work towards winning their last game and going out with a win.

Seneca has been effected all season long by injuries. The latest one Friday Night involved Sean Carroll. Sean was hurt in a previous game but recovered quickly. However, this injury will involve a longer recovery process. Sean is one of Seneca's powerhouses on the team. He has had more touchdowns this year than any other football player.

Several former alumni plan on returning to Seneca on Thanksgiving Day to see the Golden Eagles play against the Cherokee Chiefs, the last game of the 2007 season. The game is at 11:00 a.m. Right before the game , Seneca's student council will host a tailgating party at 9:00 a.m. There will also be the homecoming dance before game day. All of this involves Seneca's die hart fans.

The dud play of the game night was before the game got underway. Traditionally, football games are supposed to be started with the National Anthem. But technical difficulties and no back up plan meant that there was going to be no National Anthem before the game began. But the Seneca fans started to sing it, regardless.
